Magento Website Spotlight: SmileyCookie.com

Today we would like to highlight a Magento website that does a perfect job in creating a theme that matches what they sell. The website is SmileyCookie.com and it goes without saying that they offer smiley face cookies. As I browsed their site I took note of a few things that make them stand out […]

The home page slider is a great way to create interest and clicks to your interior pages as well as introducing what your website, as a whole, has to offer. I think they do a terrific job in using the slider to their advantage while making sure each slide’s design matches the theme of the website.

Their Main Menu For Navigation

There are many things that I like about their navigation. First of all it is very easy and the font, as well as the background image for the menu, compliment the look of the site perfectly. Outside of the design element, though, you will notice the options they provide for the customer are a bit unconventional. For instance, most websites have generic options such as ‘blog, product category 1, product category 2 etc’. If you look carefully you notice that you can search immediately by price range as well as holiday or occasion.

Allowing people to save a step by selecting through unique parameters such as price ranges and occasion will certainly give them more incentive to come back because you are not only limiting the time it would take to make a purchase but you are giving them more reasons to explore your website once they view your homepage for the first time.

Imagine if this website offered the same services, such as special gift packages or create your own cookie feature, but hid them from the navigation menu display and allowed them to only be a sub menu link that appears if you hover over the menu or if you click on a link first.

It is important to realize that the navigation menu is not only there to help you navigate the site but to also understand what the site is about and what makes your site special compared to your competitors. Instead of seeing links at the top of a navigation that say “Contact Us, Blog, About, Support, Cookie Types, FAQ” I am now able to see what they offer, what options are available to me and, without having to do anything other than mouse over a menu link, I can query immediately by price range. What more can you ask for?

Best Sellers List

Your home page is designed to do more than just introduce your product or service – it is designed to sell. One thing that tips people to the fact that you have found success with certain products is to entice people to learn more about your best sellers. If you look towards the bottom you will see a ‘best sellers’ list of cookies. As of the time of writing this, there are four cookies available. Each with a rating of 5 stars listed next to them.

Rating List

Unlike most sites who offer one star rating for a product, they are offering 3. You can create different rating systems in the Magento admin and, as you can see if you click on a product on this website, there are 3 rating systems available; taste, value and quality.

Product Page Positioning

Magento is very flexible in allowing you to re-position ‘blocks’ of data such as the product information tabs or sidebars. You can also tell Magento to load up a unique template that you design yourself so you can have full control over the product display page. This website takes advantage of that flexibility and allows the user to see the product information at the very top while allowing the rating system and ‘recommended cookies’ to take up enough space to serve their purpose.

Usually most Magento websites I encounter offer the product information tabs at the bottom and just keep a generic description at the top right of the product. To me, this is as good an example of how to sell a product as you can find with Magento. It is not overwhelming, it is easy to read and it provides you with the ability to learn more about the product, review it, read reviews and learn more about recommended/similar cookies. This is what a product page should be.

Create A Cookie Feature

This is a terrific example of how to add something custom that serves a purpose while using the architecture of Magento. You can use javascript and any custom design you want with the templates provided to you and, in this example, they have created a series of images that allow you to create your own cookie template. This allows you to preview what the cookie will look like, with the different colored frosting, as well as the different cookie shape, before you purchase them.
