Shopify Migration

Admittedly for years, we’ve been known as a Magento agency but as the ecosystem of the digital space has changed, we have changed with it. Now, we consider ourselves a truly platform-agnostic agency. We are flexible and fluid in our expertise and can support the waves of migrations across eCommerce.

Case in point, Painful Pleasures, our long-time client, returned to us for a recent rescue build. Starting off with an agency believed to be more versed in Shopify, they wanted to migrate from Magento to Shopify to help reduce their ongoing maintenance costs. Shopify’s added benefit of improved UX and site performance functionality, and fewer site management headaches reinforced that this migration was the right move for Painful Pleasures. But, relationships don’t always work out and the project was stalled. Painful Pleasures asked us to step in and get them over the finish line with the migration. Challenge accepted.

Approach

Any rescue build presents challenges because most critically, the client comes to us frustrated. Given our long history, we wanted to expeditiously finish the migration for them while turning their frustration into extreme satisfaction.

In addition to the reduced maintenance fees, Painful Pleasure’s objectives for this project included advanced customizations to support their business requirements and desired customer experience.

While each of these can be complex on its own, the fact that each feature needed to work both as a standalone feature and in conjunction with the other features added an additional layer of complexity.

For example, a customer using the bulk order form would need to be able to select from many product variants while receiving B2B pricing logic – three independent features that need to work together. While that may sound relatively straightforward,  our team of solution architects and developers had to work through all of these scenarios, making the work quite intricate.  But, our developers love complexity – it keeps them on their game. The more challenging the problem, the more innovative the solution.  In other words, they brought it.

The Logic

With this many features, it’s important to analyze and understand each one, then review the various possible approaches, and finally map the feature to a viable approach.

These approaches include solutions like Shopify API, Shopify Scripts, Shopify Functions, custom front ends, third-party apps, etc – all of which were used by Shero on this project to accomplish Painful Pleasure’s requirements.

The client had a few other customizations that were not native in Shopify, so our team had to get creative. This is where our Magento expertise came into play – we were able to create customizations including customer migrations, orders, store credits, gift cards, and even wish lists.

The Result

The project launched on May 17th. The Painful Pleasures team is happy with the Shopify migration because they were able to keep and simplify the most important parts of their business, decrease their costs, and most importantly – eliminate headaches with no more urgent issues! Check it out, Painful Pleasures, let us know what you think!
