What Shopify customer accounts include natively and where they need extending

Shopify's new customer accounts include: passwordless authentication via one time code, order history, self serve return requests (which require merchant review and approval before processing), reordering, and profile management. Sessions persist for up to 365 days. The new customer accounts cannot be customized with Liquid and cannot be styled to match your theme without a third party Customer Account Extension or the Customer Account API.

A portal that buyers do not use provides no operational benefit. Portals fail to get adoption when authentication adds too many steps, when the order history is incomplete or does not support reordering, when the return process requires a support contact rather than a self serve form, or when the portal does not match the rest of the store experience.

Passwordless authentication reduces login friction

Shopify's new customer accounts use one time email codes rather than passwords. Buyers sign in once and stay signed in for up to 365 days. This removes the password reset support burden and the login friction that keeps buyers from using account features on return visits.

Self serve returns through the account page

Shopify's native self serve returns allow buyers to submit return requests directly from their order page without contacting support. The merchant reviews and approves or declines the request in Shopify admin. Self serve returns are compatible with B2B orders. Both the B2B buyer who placed the order and the location admin can submit return requests.

Order history and reorder without rebuilding the cart

Buyers with account access see their full order history. Any past order can be reordered directly. For B2B company account holders, location admins see all orders placed by any buyer under the company. Reordering applies current pricing and terms, not the original order's pricing. The Customer Account API supports order history, return requests, and profile management within a fully branded experience.

For B2B stores, company accounts give each buyer their own login within the company account. Location admins see all company orders and can manage account settings. Buyers can place orders and view their own history. This replaces shared logins and the manual work of managing separate customer records for different people at the same company.
