Shopify Volume Discounts

Since April 2026, Shopify includes native quantity price breaks for B2B company accounts on all paid plans. For general storefront visitors, volume discounts still require a different approach. Getting the architecture wrong means buyers see no discount, the wrong discount, or a discount that breaks at checkout.

AOV increase with visible tiered pricing tables

Shopify stores that display volume pricing tables directly on product pages see average order value increase by 15 to 25% within 60 days. Buyers who can see the next price break while they are deciding how many units to add to cart will often increase their quantity to hit it.

April 2026

When native quantity breaks became available on all plans

Shopify extended native B2B quantity price breaks to all paid plans on April 2, 2026. Previously this required Shopify Plus. The catch: native quantity breaks apply only to B2B company account holders, not general storefront visitors.

3

Maximum B2B catalogs on non Plus plans

Non Plus Shopify plans (Basic, Grow, Advanced) allow up to 3 active B2B catalogs. Each catalog can have its own volume pricing tiers. For stores with more than 3 distinct customer pricing tiers, Shopify Plus or a third party app is required.

90%+

Reduction in manual B2B order adjustments with structured price lists

Operators who implement structured price lists and quantity rules through Shopify Plus B2B report reducing manual order price adjustments by over 90% compared to managing wholesale pricing through draft orders and discount codes.

The collaboration between us and Shero Commerce on the JustRite multi store site went beyond what we had hoped for. Their dedication to understanding our unique requirements has greatly enhanced our online presence.

Volume discounts on Shopify: two different problems, two different solutions

Volume discounts serve two different buyer populations on Shopify and they are configured completely differently. For B2B company account holders, Shopify's native B2B catalog system handles quantity price breaks directly on price lists. This is available on all paid plans since April 2026. For general storefront visitors who are not logged into a company account, native B2B quantity rules do not apply. Volume pricing for retail visitors requires either a third party app or custom Shopify Functions logic.

Volume discount setups that actually work at checkout

Volume pricing looks simple from the outside. The complexity is in the details: which buyers see which tiers, how price breaks display on the product page, how cart totals update as quantity changes, and whether the checkout reflects the correct price without requiring a code or manual adjustment.

01

B2B company accounts: native quantity breaks

For stores with B2B company account holders on Shopify Plus, quantity price breaks are configured directly in catalog price lists. Each tier specifies a quantity threshold and a corresponding price. The price updates in the cart as quantity changes, no app required. JustRite and STX both use this for their dealer and distributor accounts.

02

General storefront visitors: app or Shopify Functions

Native B2B quantity breaks do not apply to visitors who are not logged into a company account. For retail volume pricing visible to all storefront visitors, the options are a third party pricing app or custom logic built with Shopify Functions. The choice depends on complexity, performance requirements, and existing app stack.

03

Visible pricing tables on the product page

Volume pricing that is not visible on the product page does not change buyer behavior. The discount needs to show as a table or as per unit callouts next to the quantity selector so buyers can see the next price break before they commit to a quantity. This is the difference between volume pricing that lifts AOV and volume pricing that sits in the background. See our Shopify Plus B2B page for full detail.

04

Cart price updates progressively as quantity changes

A volume discount that only appears at checkout after the buyer has committed to a quantity does not drive the behavior you want. Cart prices should update in real time as the buyer increases quantity. This requires either a well configured pricing app or Shopify Functions logic, not discount codes applied after checkout.

05

Separate tiers for B2B and retail on the same store

Many stores need different volume pricing for wholesale accounts and retail visitors. Retail buyers see 3 tier pricing with modest quantity breaks. Wholesale buyers logged into company accounts see deeper discounts at higher minimums. Shopify Plus handles this natively. On lower plans, customer tag based pricing apps fill the gap.

06

ERP price sync for large catalogs

For manufacturers and wholesalers managing volume pricing across large catalogs, maintaining price lists manually in Shopify is not viable. ERP integration syncs pricing changes from the source system to Shopify catalogs automatically. CCL and JustRite both use ERP connected pricing to keep hundreds of SKU prices current across multiple customer tiers. See our Shopify ERP integration page for full detail.

How volume discount builds are structured

01

Buyer Type and Pricing Requirements

Who sees which discounts, at what quantities, and how the pricing should display on the product page, in the cart, and at checkout are all documented before any configuration begins.

02

Mechanism Selection

The right pricing mechanism is selected based on buyer type: native B2B catalogs for company accounts, Shopify Functions or a third party app for general storefront visitors, or both for stores serving mixed buyer populations.

03

Tier Structure and Margin Validation

Quantity thresholds and per tier prices are set against margin calculations to confirm each tier remains profitable after fulfillment costs at the expected order volume.

04

Product Page and Cart Display

Volume pricing tables are configured to display on product pages and update in cart as quantity changes. Buyers see the next price break before committing to a quantity.

05

Testing and Launch

Every buyer type is tested through the full purchase flow: product page price display, cart update behavior, checkout price accuracy, and discount application without codes.
