Taking Cara Babies

Since 2013, Taking Cara Babies has helped parents build better sleep routines for their kids. A range of issues with their custom CMS were stifling growth, including their ambition to start selling physical products alongside their sleep courses.

Having already chosen Shopify Plus for their next chapter, Taking Cara Babies brought in Shero Commerce as a specialist migration partner to handle a complex build spanning gift cards, a legacy custom platform, and custom third-party integrations, unifying their physical and digital product sales on a single platform.

The Ask

Competing in a high-growth vertical (valued at roughly $954 million in 2025 and projected to top $2 billion by 2034), with big ambitions to sell more physical products while growing revenue from their sleep and parenting courses, Taking Cara Babies needed a partner who could migrate them from their legacy custom platform to Shopify Plus without disruption.

  • A unified purchase experience for physical and digital products
  • Resolved interoperability across their tech stack
  • Faster, simpler content updates without developer time
  • Streamlined class management and refund automation
  • Freedom from the technical debt holding back their growth

Challenges on Their Legacy Custom CMS

Taking Cara Babies provided us with the following issues that would need to be overcome during the migration:

  • Problems adding new functionality
  • Interoperability issues across the tech stack
  • No unified purchase experience for digital and physical products
  • High technical debt from the legacy platform
  • CMS-related issues with page maintenance and updates
  • CMS restrictions on flexibility and scalability
  • Site speed and UX/UI issues
  • Issues with class management and duplicate purchases
Finding the Solution

Taking Cara Babies came to Shero already committed to Shopify Plus, and Shero's experience delivering complex Shopify Plus migrations quickly validated that decision.

Shopify's checkout consistently outperforms competing platforms by 5% to 36%, meaning Taking Cara Babies could see bottom-line gains without growing traffic. Shopify's WYSIWYG page editing and deep app ecosystem also cut the team's reliance on developer time for everyday updates.

Bringing it to Life

Because Taking Cara Babies' brand and design system were already working hard for them, the migration needed only minimal visual rework, freeing the team to focus on functionality.

Shero configured Kajabi and HelpScout for end-to-end data and class management, resolved API sync errors to bring Reviews.io across cleanly and keep review integrity intact on migrated products, and installed Checkout Blocks for agile checkout customization without developer time.

On top of that platform, Shero built:

  • A custom Kajabi integration that automatically detects duplicate class purchases, processes partial refunds in Shopify, and sends the customer a personalized explanation
  • A HelpScout and Shopify webhook that auto-tags customers by class purchase
  • A custom minicart upsell offering free shipping when a class is paired with a swaddle
  • A duplicate-purchase safeguard that protects customers from buying the same class twice
Overcoming Challenges

Shopify doesn't have a native answer for everything, so a handful of Taking Cara Babies' requirements needed a custom build to solve properly.

Gift cards

With no direct Shopify replacement for Taking Cara Babies' existing gift card scheme, Shero needed a way to protect customers who had already bought one without asking the brand to give up a popular product. The team migrated existing gift cards onto Shopify as discount codes, then customized the platform so gift cards kept working exactly as customers expected, with no disruption to redemption at launch.

Blog ordering

Shopify has no native way to manually reorder blog posts, but Taking Cara Babies' customers regularly search for specific, popular posts. Shero built a custom blog widget that lets the team drag-and-drop reorder posts directly from the Shopify admin.

Nested blog URLs

The client wanted a nested blog URL structure, with category paths built into the final URL, which Shopify doesn't support out of the box. Shero solved this with custom 301 mapping, preserving the desired URL structure and all existing SEO value during the migration.

SEO continuity

To preserve rankings and traffic through the move, Shero migrated every product and collection page with its original title and meta description intact, then layered in stronger structured data (WebPage, Organization, Video, FAQ, Product, Reviews, Person, and Article schema) than the original site had. Since Shopify has no native breadcrumb function, Shero built a custom breadcrumb solution with matching schema, refined the XML sitemap to prioritize high-traffic pages, and configured robots.txt, canonical tags, and pagination handling. GA4 was also fully configured from launch so Taking Cara Babies could trust its performance and attribution data going forward.

Operating costs and total cost of ownership vs. the legacy CMS

Clean, trustworthy data had been hard to come by for Taking Cara Babies, and the disconnect between digital and physical product sales was one of the clearest signals it was time to move.

That gap is now closed. Taking Cara Babies operates from a single, futureproofed Shopify Plus platform, with the organizational and operational benefits that come from having their tech stack finally work together.

The Breakdown

  • A unified digital and physical product experience on one platform
  • Enhanced scalability, with internal teams able to update pages without developer time
  • Streamlined class management, refund automation, and protection against duplicate class purchases
  • A faster, more secure, better-branded checkout experience
  • Accurate end-to-end data via Kajabi, HelpScout, plus properly configured GA4 and Shopify analytics
  • Preserved SEO value through accurate product and collection migration, improved structured data, custom breadcrumbs, and a refined XML sitemap

Since launching on Shopify in September 2025, Taking Cara Babies has seen organic impressions and average position move in the right direction, even as clicks track the same industry-wide dip most sectors saw following changes to SERPs, the rollout of AI Overviews, and reduced bot traffic. Core Web Vitals have been in the green from day one.
