What Hydrogen development is and what it involves

Hydrogen is Shopify's React framework for headless storefronts. It gives teams complete frontend control. It is not a simpler way to build on Shopify. It requires React expertise, a longer timeline, and ongoing Storefront API maintenance. Hydrogen's September 2025 release integrated React Router v7.9.2 with first-class type-safe routes and middleware support. Hydrogen provides the Shopify-specific primitives on top: cart logic, customer account handling, money formatting, Shop Pay, consent, and first-party analytics. Shero builds Hydrogen storefronts on these primitives rather than reinventing them, which keeps the codebase maintainable as Shopify's quarterly API releases ship breaking changes.

Oxygen hosting at the edge, included in every Shopify plan

Oxygen deploys Hydrogen storefronts to 100+ global edge locations with zero additional hosting cost. It provides multiple deployment environments for staging and preview, built-in environment variable management, and deployment logs. Oxygen also supports Storefront MCP, which exposes live store data to AI agents. Alternative hosting on Vercel, Cloudflare Workers, or Node is possible, but Storefront MCP support is currently Oxygen-only.

Winter 2026 Edition added Storefront MCP support to Hydrogen on Oxygen. MCP exposes live product, cart, customer, and order data to AI agents built with any MCP-compatible tooling. A custom AI shopping assistant running inside the storefront can read the actual catalog and cart state in real time rather than a stale training snapshot. This is infrastructure-level integration, not a feature flag. It connects directly to the broader AI commerce readiness work Shero does for brands preparing for agentic shopping channels.

Headless CMS connected to Hydrogen for editorial content that Liquid cannot support

Brands that need editorial flexibility beyond Shopify's sections and metafields typically pair Hydrogen with a headless CMS: Contentful, Sanity, or Prismic. Shero integrates the CMS data layer into the Hydrogen storefront alongside the Storefront API, so commerce data and editorial content render from the same server-side request without layout shifts.

Quarterly Storefront API versioning requires ongoing maintenance

Shopify versions its Storefront API quarterly. Hydrogen is tied to specific API versions, and breaking changes in the API produce breaking changes in the framework. Hydrogen storefronts that are not maintained against each quarterly release accumulate technical debt that compounds into larger migration projects. Shero's retainer programs include Hydrogen version tracking and API migration work alongside the standard Shopify Plus support scope.
